Welcome to The Paper Cycle

A great deal of confusion and misinformation surrounds the paper and print cycle: how paper gets recycled. The main aim of this website is to explain and illustrate the cycle but to concentrate less on what happens and more on why it happens: the importance of Market Forces. Market Forces must be understood to fully understand the paper and print cycle. My approach is to avoid regurgitating the usual points about recycled paper and to avoid repeating information that exists elsewhere. I'm trying to bring a new approach to this topic and I question a few accepted wisdoms, and, of course, Greenwash, in this subject area.

Additionally, the concept of FSC-certified virgin fibre has been a runaway success and usurped recycled fibre as the best material choice, environmentally. It’s time to set the record straight. There is a little known life cycle analysis that forms the foundation of this website: Environmental benefits of recycling paper. It’s the most important document in the virgin fibre / recycled fibre debate.

This website has been created by David Shorto, paper and print buyer for Greenpeace; with special thanks to Paperback, Robert Horne and INGEDE for their help. It should be confirmed that the focus of this website is graphic papers.
